JAN CAIRNES, Executive Director

Jan Cairnes, Certified Prevention Professional, plays a key role in educating families on the disease of addiction and the critical role parents play in prevention.  Jan is known for her high energy presentations, which is coupled with her passion for parenting.  These attributes have fueled her successful implementation of prevention and education strategies. As a renowned parent educator and motivational speaker, she positively impacts the lives of parents and their children for the past 25 years.

Jan joined Hanley Center in 1998 to bring a model approach to prevention education.  She has co-authored two prevention programs, Bounce: Be a Resilient Child, for children ages six to 12; and Aging to Perfection, an education program for older adults.  She is published in Parenting Plus Magazine and has spoken at numerous state prevention conferences.

Jan represented Hanley Center and the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) at the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s Clean Sport Alliance and is a national trainer of Atlas and Athena steroid and eating disorder prevention and health promotion programs. She is a founding member of Professionals Against Doping and Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) Taskforce and served as vice president of their board for five years.

Jan voluntarily served as interim executive director of the Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition in 2010.  She is a FHSAA Official for track and field and cross-country, and is a member of the FHSAA Steroid Prevention Steering Committee.

Jan is the recipient of the prestigious 2006 Sports Illustrated Award and increased the number of SI school awards given in Florida from four to 17 through her fundraising efforts.  Jan was a 2007 finalist for Sun-Sentinel’s Sports Person of the Year.  

In 2008, she was named Outstanding Sports Contributor by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Hall of Fame.  In 2011, Jan was named a Cardinal Newman High School Distinguished Basketball Crusader.

Jan received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Eastern Kentucky University.  Jan was recently named to the Prevention Transformation Initiative Design and Development Team for the State of Florida Department of Children and Families Prevention System.  She is a national trainer for Active Parenting, Mental Health First Aid and other programs.
